Olivia Batchelder is a full-time artist residing in Laguna Beach, California. In addition to her painting career, she has educated hundreds of students about the exotic discipline of silk painting. Early in her career, she taught fashion illustration at Orange Coast College and Long Beach City College in California. Later on, she taught Master Classes for the California Art Education Association, Community Classes at the Laguna College of Art & Design, an art and culture program at the Tuscany Institute for Advanced Studies in Italy, and classes for the Sawdust Art Festival. She continues to explore new ways of working with color and form.

BEGINNING SILK PAINTING - Color & Line with Olivia Batchelder

Learn how to use vibrant dyes on silk canvas. No experience necessary. Make 2 colorful scarves in class. Learn color mixing with dyes, silk painting outline technique, plus some basic watercolor techniques useful in silk painting. This a great class if you are interested in learning to paint silk scarves, silk fabrics for garments, making wall hangings, or unusual fabrics for quilting. You will learn how to stretch silk for painting, how to transfer a design to a piece of silk, painting techniques, how to use special tools, how to steam silk for color permanency, plus tips on dye chemistry and various types of silk. You'll take home 3 finished pieces, plus your supply kit.

Natasha Foucault is a master artist who has chosen silk painting to render her detailed paintings on silk. She uses realistic imagery and focuses on landscapes, street scenes, still life, figurative work, and portraits. Well-grounded in classical painting techniques, she has developed a unique style while using vibrant dyes on silk canvas.  TWELVE TEXTURES - Layered Effects for Depth and Richness in Silk Painting with Olivia Batchelder

$195 includes all materials and equipment necessary
Artful textures can be created with chemical reactions - from mixing unlike compounds; using photoreactivity; by applying heat, cold, or pressure; from physical manipulations; from biological means; and other ways. Some are possible only in specific climatic conditions, such as very humid or very dry. No previous experience is necessary. This class is appropriate for anyone with an interest in artwork, not just silk painting. These techniques can be applied to any artform. Textural treatments are beautiful in and of themselves, and are useful for both abstract and realisitic paintings.

Learn how to create wonderful scarf designs incorporating colorful borders. Make a fabulous square scarf in this class. Using outline resist, you will be able to mix imagery,motif, rich texture, and colorful borders in the same piece to create a sophistocated and vibrantly colorful scarf - great additions to your wardrobe. If you've tried to make a scarf design with a border, or some artwork that includes perfectly straight lines, you may have come up with a challenge. Learn how to do this effectively! Olivia will show you step-by-step how to do it using special techniques. Open to returning students as well as new students with a serious interest in silk painting.
